Description
Part I of Heavy Ion Reactions deals with elastic and inelastic processes and is taken from the original version of this text. Part II is all-new material, and it discusses transfer reactions, events which play a central role in heavy ion collisions. Special attention is given to processes involving the transfer of two nucleons which are specific for probing pairing correlations in nuclei. The treatment of these correlations in classical terms is novel and is published here for the first time. It provides, together with the collective description of surface vibrations and rotations discussed in Part I, a unified picture of heavy ion reactions in terms of the elementary modes of nuclear excitation. The original thinking and much of the material in this book cannot be found in any other work on heavy ion reactions or nuclear structure. This book will be essential reading for beginning graduate students as well as experienced researchers.
