At the interface between physics and chemistry, and with a considerable interest in the field of material science, magnetochemistry is a rapidly growing discipline. A large amount of recently obtained experimental data now allows for a comprehensive theoretical interpretation of this phenomena. This book presents a review of the theoretical concepts of molecular magnetism, which has its roots in quantum chemistry. The first part of the work treats relativistic effects, quantum-mechanical methods, angular momentum, the irreductible tensor operator technique, and group theory. A clear introduction of magnetic parameters (magnetic tensor quantities) is demonstrated through a differentiation of total energy, and the contemporary methods for its direct determination are reviewed. The statistical thermodynamics passage from microscopic energy levels to macroscopic thermodynamic quantities, such as the isothermal differential magnetic susceptibility, is revealed. An overview of magnetic materials is presented.
